Installation view, Shadow of a doubt, 2026

Shadow of a doubt is the first exhibition of New York artist Jackson Lang Fischbach, a two-year survey of instant photographs and photograms (made without the use of a camera), addressing love, viewership, language, and photography as a material object.

His practice integrates landscapes, macros, constructed still lifes, and hand-printed text, approaching the medium indexically and wielding genre as a flexible tool.

Fighter, 2026. Instant photograph in artist’s frame. 1.8 x 2.4in (4.6 x 6.10 cm) each, 16 x 20in (40.6 cm × 50.8 cm) overall

Experiments with language introduce themes of love and translation, through descriptive text and ‘looking-phrases’ suspended over gradients and color fields. In this space there is no promise of camera objectivity. The backgrounds carry traces of a physical environment, suggesting intimate spatial theaters within the photographic windows above which selections of text sit at the glossy surface of the picture plane.

Planet Crash, 2026. (2) instant photographs in artist’s frame. 1.8 x 2.4in (4.6 x 6.10 cm) each, 16 x 20in (40.6 cm × 50.8 cm) overall

Straighter photographs in the show similarly manipulate space, such as Planet Crash (2026), two sequenced frames in which colliding bodies produce energy and light in an act of scale-uncertain destruction and generation. The subjects in Shadow of a doubt range from the impossible to the mundane, making the conditions of their representation highly visible. Rosalind Krauss described a comparable shift away from subject in the work of James Welling (Photography and Abstraction, 1989), as “holding the referent at bay, creating as much delay as possible between seeing the image and understanding what it is of.”

Association, 2025. (3) instant photographs in artist’s frame. 1.8 x 2.4in (4.6 x 6.10 cm) each, 16 x 20in (40.6 cm × 50.8 cm) overall

In Shadow of a doubt, photograms engage a tradition of imagemaking without the use of a camera. Works such as Fighter (2026), and Shapes (2026), insist on photography as an act of contact, registering the evidence of controlled light conditions and inviting scrutiny of their surface, imbued with private traces of studio actions — human touch.
